If you are looking for an intro to SMPS’s as a novice or hobbyist, forget it. It’s not a practical “how to build…” book. For someone with some switch mode experience it’s not a bad book to have and there is some very valuable information which will benefit all. I was a little disappointed, especially since the book flags the EDN banner . I really expected some more depth and more of a practical approach.

This book is a must have for power supplies cooks. BUT you should not read it as a Bible. This book has some flaws – but on the hole it’s perfect!

I found this book to be informative, however, after reviewing the book and trying to work through the examples I found a tremendous amount of errors, mis-prints and, lack of continuity.
I would not recommend this book for the beginner, but for the experienced tech it does offer some unique thoughts.

This book falls short in the presentation. It does not include any information on topologies for SMPS over 500 watts and its only reference design of any high current bulk power supply is a current mode controlled 280 watt Half-Bridge converter which can be scaled but it does include a lot of information on basic converter design. If you are looking for information to assist in the design of high power smps then look else where, this book will not help you. A better choice is Switching Power Design by Abraham Pressman.

Hi Marty,
I am designing a guitar pedal and I don’t want to employ any noisy switching power supply.
I want three regulated voltages: +5, -5 and 9 V (to replace a battery that degrades), with about 500 ma per output.
And I want to use a 12/24 DC wall-plug adapter.
I want crowbar and OV protection, very low noise (micro volt range), and great regulation (0.1% or better).
After searching your book (looks very good), I will buy it regardless of reviews with 1, 2, or 3 stars (what do those reviewers know).
So, what will your next revision contain?
